10 Ways to Get More From Walks with Children

It is no secret that there is an obesity epidemic in the United States. As parents it is important that we do our part to encourage our kids to get out there and move. Going for a walk is an easy way to get everyone moving. However, sometimes it takes a little creativity to get your kids out the door.

 Here are 10 ways to have fun and learn while out on your walk.

1. Make a scavenger hunt. Write a list of things to find or for non-readers you can make a picture list of objects for them to cross off as you walk. This list can be based on colors, or certain objects or a certain numbers of objects; it just depends on where you are walking.

2. Take Pictures. My boys love to take pictures when we go on walks. You can give them an old camera, buy a disposable or help them use yours, but kids enjoy taking pictures. When you get home, you can take those pictures and make them into a simple book.

It's Playtime! Activities for My Toddler

This year is the year for George.
Or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

He's 16 months right now.
So he still can't do a lot of the activities that Henry and I get into.

We have a lot of time to ourselves, just the two of us.
Some nice Mommy and Me time.

But we rarely set out to do something.
We just play.

I want to start getting him involved.
Be hands on with him.

30 Kids Activities & Materials for Promoting Fine Motor Skills

Fine Motor Skills have always been put on a back burner in this house, until recently.

What a difference a year makes!
Last year, Henry wouldn't sit still, or have any desire to do anything that didn't involve a lot of running around. We were really into activities that promoted his gross motor skills at that time.

But recently, Henry's taken a turn and likes to focus on some of these littler things.
He loves to cut especially.

Experiments and Activities this Week. Lots of Learning!

1. The week started off on a very serious note. Advocating for your child's education is something every parent should know how to do. Melissa of ImaginationSoup.net shared some of her strategies.
2. Henry and I experimented and made ourselves our own lava lamp!
3. A fun way to make art, with melted crayon shavings! 
4. It's Playtime! had more experiments from our playdate friends.
5. Emma of Science Sparks shared a fun way to learn about building structures, with marshmallows and dry spaghetti noodles.
6. And a fun, new idea. Creating a kid-friendly activity with some hearts and clothespins.

This week...

We got a lot of snow.
The boys finally got to go sledding!
[Thank you to my husband for taking them!]

They love it.
George wasn't the fondest of the snow though.
He can't really walk in it, and he falls down quite often... getting a face full of the white stuff.

Henry is 3 years. George is 1 year.
