Big vs Small

We did a couple activities with Big and Small this week.

Henry and I 'got our toes out' (as Henry says) - and traced our feet. Henry tried his best tracing mine. We even got George's out too. And someone else's too... can you guess? Blue Dog's!

We traced all our feet on some paper (we have a nice big roll of butcher paper for this kind of stuff!).

We then talked about whose was biggest, smallest, a little bigger and so on. He had fun fitting his feet in the other footprints and seeing whose were bigger or smaller.

Henry tried to line up the cupcakes from smallest to largest and vice versa.


Is my toddler the only one that doesn't get this?

Henry understands big and small. But can never put them in an order of biggest to smallest. When it comes to nesting or stacking, he doesn't get that either.

Henry had more fun hauling the cupcakes with his backhoe - Telling me as he hauled them which one is big and which one is small.


Education.com is a new website that I've come across and have found loads of activities and printables! (I'm just a little excited!) We stuck to our theme this week and did a Big vs Small worksheet. Henry had no trouble with these - I mostly tried to get him to circle his answer on his own.

He circled one pretty good on his own - can you tell which one?


Henry is about 33 months old now.

Toddler Talk : Potty Training

This week's topic is Potty Training. 

I've been debating about actually writing about our issues or not because I have no answer to it. But I decided to give it a go ahead. 

We are in the middle of potty training - on and off officially. I think we're always potty training. Just not very successful at it. We have tried a few times switching to real underwear the entire day (not at nap or night), it usually lasts for a couple days at a time and by that time, I'm exhausted. 

And my washer can't keep up fast enough.

Henry's getting better though - not successful, just better. He now tells me that he has to go - but its usually always after he already went. 

Pooping is actually more successful than peeing around here - everyone I tell this too gets so excited for me because pooping is such a milestone to accomplish on the potty. Not here. Pooping in general is a milestone for this kid. 

I can always tell when he has to poop - so he gets sat on the potty. It may take 4 or 5 tries at 5-10 minutes each (this conveniently happens about 3 times a day, during every meal - I'd really like a warm meal one of these days) until he actually will allow himself to do it, but, it usually happens... sometime that day. 

Peeing. Well, at least he's uncomfortable now after he pees and wants to sit on the potty and be changed ASAP. That's a step, right? 

We'll get there when we get there and until then, I'll be frustrated.

Shaken, not stirred, Painted Hearts

We're kicking off Valentine's Day with some Shaken Painted Hearts.

This was such a fun no-mess craft to do - with crazy pretty results!

Use some sort of container that you can close up tightly - we just used a box we had lying around.

Cut some paper hearts out of construction/scrapbook paper - we used purple, pink, bright pink and red. I double-sided taped them to the inside bottom of the box.

Lots and lots of fun to be had! 
We've been doing activities pretty steadily around here. 

color collage : I laid out a few different colors of construction paper that I had - and then ripped up some random scraps of construction/scrapbook paper of the same colors - but all different shades of those colors. I then mixed up the scraps and put them in a pile (we started out with way too big of a pile and it was a little overwhelming for Henry). Henry then took each piece and matched it to its color paper.

water transfer : I set Henry up to the kitchen sink on his 'big stool' and put a couple big containers in the sink with some measuring cups, spoons and we tried a syringe. I put water in one container and told him to get it to the other one using the utensils I gave him. 
He really tried the syringe -- but just couldn't get the fact that it had to be in the water when he pulled up on it. This entertained him for a long time. He transferred the water multiple times between the two containers. 
Being the smart boy that he is, there were times when he wanted nothing to do with the utensils and just grabbed the entire container and poured it into the other.

pipe cleaner fishing : Henry went fishing! I bent some pipe cleaners into shapes of fish and made a fishing pole with a hook on the end. Put the fish in some jars - and Henry fished for them!

coin cleaning : I'm not making a slave out of my son, I swear. I gave Henry a couple options on what he wanted to do - and he almost begged to clean the coins! 
I put some coins in some water (I added some vinegar and baking soda too) - and let him have a toothbrush to scrub them clean. He loved how the baking soda fizzed up when he poured it in (I have it in an empty spice container) - so he kept shaking it in.
