It's Playtime! The Heart Project Features

The Heart Project has been kicked off great.
A week into it and we've raised well over our initial goal over $1,000 for the American Heart Association. We've now re-evaluated our goal, and lifted it to $2k, will you help us make it?

The Heart Project is a book [The Heart Book] full of heart projects for kids to do! So many great ideas to get crafty and artsy, even get the kids in the kitchen with you, or play with some hearty items!

A few were found last week on It's Playtime. I thought I'd give you another sneak peek of the hearts in the book.

I don't mind giving you these sneak peeks of the heart projects that are in the book. Because there are well over 100 heart projects in the book. So this is just a slim choosing of them!

Plus, they're pretty awesome and I just have to show them off!

Valentine's Activity for Kids: Hunt for Love

I decided that we needed some kind of Valentine's Day activity to do, instead of just crafty and artsy ideas.

We did a heart hunt last year, with great success.
But this year, I wanted to make Henry think about love a little.

So I came up with a Hunt for Love.

To start, we needed to make plain white paper bags pretty so its ready for some love, right?
George was around and awake, so we wanted to include him and have him decorate a bag too.
I quickly came up with something that's colorful, edible and can be painted with.

Yogurt.

Activity: Snowman Fridge

snowman on the fridge activity

A very large snowman for your kitchen!
This is so easy to do!
I made ours an interactive snowman.

I cut out the following pieces from craft foam sheets.
  • 2 large black circles [eyes]
  • 3 medium black circles [buttons]
  • 5 small black circles [mouth]
  • 1 orange triangle [nose]
snowman activity
If you don't have the craft foam sheets, construction or scrapbook paper would work for this too! That's what I saw done at "Crafting" my Talents.

My foam is self-adhesive. Potentially, I could have just stuck them onto the fridge like that and would have been even easier.

Instead, I cut out a little circle in the middle of the sticky paper and stuck on a craft magnet [Thanks Craftprojectideas.com for them!]. It would be even easier with self-adhesive craft magnets!

A snowman needs a scarf too, right?
Take some of that leftover wrapping paper, the scraps work well, or just a 3 inch strip off the end of a roll does the trick too.

Simply cut the wrapping paper in long strips to form the scarf. I taped the scarf in place.
Ta-da, you've made yourself a snowman!

Now let the kids have fun making silly faces with the pieces!
snowman crafty activity

Counting pieces adds a little learning to the activity!
Henry counted the number of mouth pieces and buttons on the snowman!

Bonus: It made me clean off my fridge! I think this will have to be done every year just for that sole reason!

10 Simple Ways to Slow Down & Make Your Child's Day

Today's post is written and shared by Joyce at Dinosaurs & Octopuses.
10 wonderful ways to slow down and savor the moments with your kids this holiday season!
We all need to take time to do these!

Life can be hectic and busy.
Parenting can sometimes seem to compound that problem.
And then there's the holidays.

It's very easy to get caught up in your to-do list. Or at least, it is for me. We are always having to run here or there, finish this, clean that. Sometimes I find myself saying "no" when I should be saying "yes!"

Today, I wanted to share a few ideas on making time to slow down and have fun.

parenting slow down for kids!

I try to allow time to have fun, but sometimes we really don't have the time to jump over every crack.

When we've had an especially hurried few days I like to plan one day to be a preschoolers paradise. We still do what needs to be done, but I take extra care in the planning and make it my mission to say yes. I try to view the entire day through the eyes of my preschooler.

Five things we do while running errands:
  1. We jump over the cracks! Both of us, it's more fun that way.
  2. He pushes all the buttons! Elevators, debit card machines, coke machines.
  3. We stop at the grocery store with the carousel even if we don't have shopping to do. It's sacrificing five minutes time for some smiles and giggles. Well worth it.
  4. We take the time to stop and watch that trail of ants, find the perfect rock, or read every sign we see. This is something we try to do everyday, but it can often get pushed to the side when we are in a hurry.
  5. We have coin races in the Children's Miracle Network donation bins. I bring a bag of change for this purpose. We watch the coins spin round and round. We declare victors.
slow down for the kids during the holidays

Five ideas for the time spent at home:
  1. Let them help make dinner. Let them pick dinner! Yes, it might be more work for you, but they'll be thrilled to help. And you might get the added bonus of them eating better than usual.
  2. Play that board game before you make the phone call. Most games don't take that long to play and making your child a priority will make them feel extra special.
  3. Read them one more book. Or three!
  4. Is it going to make a mess? Help them make a mess! Let them help you clean it up. That can be almost as much fun as making the mess. No, really.
  5. Plan an extra special bath. Instead of getting them out, add more warm water once the original water turns cold. My son looks forward to bath time, but by that time, I'm often looking forward to bed time. This is always a favorite!

All of these things combined makes for a very happy child. I usually get a lot of sweet comments at the end of one of these days. The truth is, I'm happier too. But you don't have to do all of these things in one day like we do. Have you been feeling rushed? Set out to try a few things from this list, or come up with a few of your own. You'll all be glad you did.

What can you do to slow down
and make your child extra happy?

Music: Christmas Cheer

Guest Post by

A Mom With A Lesson Plan

Some Christmas Cheer is being spread today by Jill at A Mom with a Lesson Plan.
Turn up the volume and sing along!

Hi! This is Jill from amomwithalessonplan.com. I am so excited to be visiting hands on: as we grow today! I am also excited that Jamie is taking a well deserved break. Some of you may not know, but along with running this blog Jamie is also a huge support in our little education / mommy blogger network. I am lucky to have her as a "bloggy friend"!

Little M [my 4 year old] and I love to sing together. Good thing or I'd be singing all by myself ;). These are two of our very favorite Christmas songs.
I have no idea where I learned them... so I can't hand out credit.
I hope they bring a little extra Christmas cheer to your holiday!

Art: Christmas Coffee Filter Garland

Guest Post by
Christmas coffee filter garland

Laura at Art for Little Hands is sharing a Christmas Art Project!
A garland that can be adjusted to any holiday!
A perfect open-ended art project for the kids.

Coffee filter banner

How many alternate uses are there for coffee filters?
A google search of coffee filter craft brings up 1,680,000 pictures of crafts you can do with a coffee filters.

This month at Art For Little Hands we are doing several art projects using the medium of a coffee filter. One of those projects we worked on this last week was a coffee filter banner.

This is such a simple and easy way to dress your house up for any occasion. I love that anyone can take part in this art project. As long as someone can hold a marker they can take pride in the final results.

For this art project you will need:
  • coffee filters
  • markers: we used both bingo dot markers and crayola washable markers
  • a long piece of string, ribbon, or thread
  • glue
At Art For Little Hands, we like to do art that is more open ended.
The only thing I told my children they should do was try to make their art look like Christmas.
After folding the coffee filter one time in half, I let the children create.

After each child had made about three or more coffee filter art pieces, I then glued the filter onto a long piece of wrapping ribbon using my two year old as a helper.

The banner is now an inviting part of our Christmas decor and the kids feel proud that their art work is on display!

Christmas Craft: Fingerprint Homemade Cards

Guest Post by

Today, a Christmas craft is shared by Bernadette at Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas.
Leave your fingerprint these holidays with some fingerprint Christmas Cards!
These crafty cards are adorable and very kid-friendly!

I adore the holidays - lots of family, friends, food, good times, getting together and, of course, fun activities galore! The Lil Divas and I have been busy little elves: crafting, creating and learning.

I like to have them make homemade gifts, ornaments and cards for loved ones. One of the things I am particularly obsessed with fond of are hand & fingerprint crafts. It is personal, a piece of the Lil Divas frozen in time - a heartfelt keepsake.

Today, I am going to share some fun & easy ideas for
Fingerprint Christmas Cards
Supplies Needed:
  • card stock
  • green, white & red paint [acrylic would be best but you can use tempra - we did!]
  • sequins & glue [optional]

Fingerprint Christmas Tree Card
What To Do:
  1. Using thumbprint dipped in green paint make a tree by applying 6 thumbprints for the bottom, then 5,4,3,2 and finally 1 for the tip of the tree.

  2. Paint a trunk using brown paint or use 2 thumbprints.

  3. Apply sequin decorations if desired.

  4. Allow to dry and write message inside to complete card.

Fingerprint Wreath Card

What To Do:
  1. Using thumbprint dipped in green paint make a circle of fingerprints to form a wreath.
  2. Using pinkie dipped in red paint add a few berries scattered throughout the wreath.
  3. Draw a bow or add some ribbon if desired.

  4. Allow to dry and write message inside to complete card.
I hope you enjoyed our little tutorial & are inspired to make some homemade crafts with your little ones.

We have lots of other holiday and finger/hand/foot print crafts on our blog.
We'd love to have you stop by and see what else we've been up to.
