10 Simple Ways to Slow Down & Make Your Child's Day

Today's post is written and shared by Joyce at Dinosaurs & Octopuses.
10 wonderful ways to slow down and savor the moments with your kids this holiday season!
We all need to take time to do these!

Life can be hectic and busy.
Parenting can sometimes seem to compound that problem.
And then there's the holidays.

It's very easy to get caught up in your to-do list. Or at least, it is for me. We are always having to run here or there, finish this, clean that. Sometimes I find myself saying "no" when I should be saying "yes!"

Today, I wanted to share a few ideas on making time to slow down and have fun.

parenting slow down for kids!

I try to allow time to have fun, but sometimes we really don't have the time to jump over every crack.

When we've had an especially hurried few days I like to plan one day to be a preschoolers paradise. We still do what needs to be done, but I take extra care in the planning and make it my mission to say yes. I try to view the entire day through the eyes of my preschooler.

Five things we do while running errands:
  1. We jump over the cracks! Both of us, it's more fun that way.
  2. He pushes all the buttons! Elevators, debit card machines, coke machines.
  3. We stop at the grocery store with the carousel even if we don't have shopping to do. It's sacrificing five minutes time for some smiles and giggles. Well worth it.
  4. We take the time to stop and watch that trail of ants, find the perfect rock, or read every sign we see. This is something we try to do everyday, but it can often get pushed to the side when we are in a hurry.
  5. We have coin races in the Children's Miracle Network donation bins. I bring a bag of change for this purpose. We watch the coins spin round and round. We declare victors.
slow down for the kids during the holidays

Five ideas for the time spent at home:
  1. Let them help make dinner. Let them pick dinner! Yes, it might be more work for you, but they'll be thrilled to help. And you might get the added bonus of them eating better than usual.
  2. Play that board game before you make the phone call. Most games don't take that long to play and making your child a priority will make them feel extra special.
  3. Read them one more book. Or three!
  4. Is it going to make a mess? Help them make a mess! Let them help you clean it up. That can be almost as much fun as making the mess. No, really.
  5. Plan an extra special bath. Instead of getting them out, add more warm water once the original water turns cold. My son looks forward to bath time, but by that time, I'm often looking forward to bed time. This is always a favorite!

All of these things combined makes for a very happy child. I usually get a lot of sweet comments at the end of one of these days. The truth is, I'm happier too. But you don't have to do all of these things in one day like we do. Have you been feeling rushed? Set out to try a few things from this list, or come up with a few of your own. You'll all be glad you did.

What can you do to slow down
and make your child extra happy?

A Mom With A Lesson Plan

Some Christmas Cheer is being spread today by Jill at A Mom with a Lesson Plan.
Turn up the volume and sing along!

Hi! This is Jill from amomwithalessonplan.com. I am so excited to be visiting hands on: as we grow today! I am also excited that Jamie is taking a well deserved break. Some of you may not know, but along with running this blog Jamie is also a huge support in our little education / mommy blogger network. I am lucky to have her as a "bloggy friend"!

Little M [my 4 year old] and I love to sing together. Good thing or I'd be singing all by myself ;). These are two of our very favorite Christmas songs.
I have no idea where I learned them... so I can't hand out credit.
I hope they bring a little extra Christmas cheer to your holiday!

Art: Christmas Coffee Filter Garland

Guest Post by
Christmas coffee filter garland

Laura at Art for Little Hands is sharing a Christmas Art Project!
A garland that can be adjusted to any holiday!
A perfect open-ended art project for the kids.

Coffee filter banner

How many alternate uses are there for coffee filters?
A google search of coffee filter craft brings up 1,680,000 pictures of crafts you can do with a coffee filters.

This month at Art For Little Hands we are doing several art projects using the medium of a coffee filter. One of those projects we worked on this last week was a coffee filter banner.

This is such a simple and easy way to dress your house up for any occasion. I love that anyone can take part in this art project. As long as someone can hold a marker they can take pride in the final results.

For this art project you will need:
  • coffee filters
  • markers: we used both bingo dot markers and crayola washable markers
  • a long piece of string, ribbon, or thread
  • glue
At Art For Little Hands, we like to do art that is more open ended.
The only thing I told my children they should do was try to make their art look like Christmas.
After folding the coffee filter one time in half, I let the children create.

After each child had made about three or more coffee filter art pieces, I then glued the filter onto a long piece of wrapping ribbon using my two year old as a helper.

The banner is now an inviting part of our Christmas decor and the kids feel proud that their art work is on display!

These crafty cards are adorable and very kid-friendly!

I adore the holidays - lots of family, friends, food, good times, getting together and, of course, fun activities galore! The Lil Divas and I have been busy little elves: crafting, creating and learning.

I like to have them make homemade gifts, ornaments and cards for loved ones. One of the things I am particularly obsessed with fond of are hand & fingerprint crafts. It is personal, a piece of the Lil Divas frozen in time - a heartfelt keepsake.

Today, I am going to share some fun & easy ideas for
Fingerprint Christmas Cards

Christmas Crafts: Child-Made Cards

Guest Post by
play

Two fun Christmas Card Crafts for the kids to make!
Its shared by Cathy at NurtureStore.
[I love her point that they don't have to be perfect. That's kind of the best part!]

Simple child-made Christmas cards

With two crafty kids in the house we love to make and send some simple child-made Christmas cards to our friends and family. I love adding homemade touches to our celebration and I think sending a special card to someone they love is a fun way to involve children in the spirit of the holiday.

Here are two simple design ideas that are easy to make and look super cute.

Simple Christmas tree card:
  child made christmas cards

This design is so easy to make and invites the children to add their own embellishments. The tree is made from a triangle shaped piece of paper, which you simply stick to the front your card. Then it's over to the children to add all the decorations. You can glue on shapes, use stickers and, in our house at least, add lots and lots of glitter.

Easy snowman card :
child made christmas cards

The snowman is made from two circles of cotton wool, glued in place on the front of the card. Even very young children can add faces, buttons and arms with a pencil or marker pen. We like to add a few falling snowflakes, made by sticking on some sequins. I love how each of the snowmen my kids made looks different, with it's own little personality.

Child-made Christmas cards don't have to be perfect.
The very fact that they have been hand-made makes them special, and using bold shapes with your child's own embellishments is a great-looking combination.

More Christmas craft ideas :
If your kids love lots of Christmas making they might like to try our paper plate angels or our model Christmas village.

Craft: Gingerbread House Greeting Card

Maggy at Red Ted Art is sharing a Christmas Craft today!
These are cute holiday cards made to look like a real gingerbread house!
But one you can send in the mail to friends and family!

red ted art craft
Hello! My name is Maggy and I am from Red Ted Art, where I regularly do Kids Crafts with my two preschoolers and share weekly "How Tos" to inspire adults and teens. So lovely to be here today and to be guest posting for Jamie on Hands on As We Grow.

I love Jamie’s blog and all her fabulous play and craft activities – she has certainly kept us busy in November with the Play Challenge! It is wonderful to be here to share one of our crafts with you today!

Today, we're making “Gingerbread House Greeting Cards”
[or pictures, depending on whether you would like to keep them!!]

Depending on your child’s age, you can help “more or less”. My son is just under three in these photos, so I did all the cutting and he did all the sticking! But older children can help cut out shapes too. Or you could buy the pre-cut shapes with sticky backs.

Materials: Card stock [we made our cards A5 size], brown paper [I used some old packing paper], white paper & a red felt tip pen, some funky foam for the "smarties" [you can use coloured paper though], some corrugated card for the heart [again you can use coloured paper], blue paper for clouds [optional of course], scissors, glue, hole punch [optional].

  • Icing: I made the white "icing border" with a hole punch - punching lots of holes in a row and then cutting it out in a wiggly line.
  • Candy cane: windows, door and cane - I drew diagonal read stripes on a piece of white paper and then cut out what I needed – if I made these again, I would just cut out white candy canes and let my son do the stripes – he really is into do lines at the moment!!
  • Smarties: circles cut from foam
  • Heart: corrugated heart
  • Clouds
My son "got" straight away that we were going to make a Gingerbread House. I think the candy cane gave it away. If you have a child that isn’t so sure, you can either show them this post, or you can lay out all the pieces like a puzzle and as a guide, so they have an idea of the finished item. I find that small children, don’t always know “what the final item” will look like, so they don’t know where to start.

Do let them be creative and stick things where they like, but also do “guide” them, by giving them idea what some could look like!

I showed him roughly were things "should go" but let him stick it down himself.
gingerbread house greeting card craft

He decided the Smarties should go in the windows and door, but later took the ones on the door off and placed them around the house. As with the "edible" Gingerbread House, we were tempted to cut out more and more things and your imagination is the limit. But there is a part of me that says "less is more".

Here is the "plain" house.

Here is the "finished" house.

We used one card as a thank you card to friends and kept the second one [I really wanted to send it to Granny and Grandpa, but my son really wanted to keep! So I let him]!

I do hope you like our little gingerbread houses and that they have inspired you to have a go! Do stop by at Red Ted Art sometime... or if you fancy check out my other site The Good Life Bloggers (all about good things in life!) too..

Thank you Jamie for having me!

Creative Christmas Countdown : Decorate the Kids Rooms

Today is Day 12 of the Creative Christmas Countdown

Decorate the Kids Rooms!

Decorating the kids rooms is definitely going to be a new Christmas tradition!
Henry and I decided on creating a Christmas tree of lights in the corner of his bedroom.

We found a string of lights and I got busy taping and stringing them up.
I did hammer one nail in at the top near the corner of the ceiling.
Using that nail, I strung the lights over top and down to the baseboard.
There I taped them in place [hoping that it'll hold enough through the holidays]!

While Henry didn't really help with hanging the lights,
he 'assisted' me instead with grabbing the items for me when I needed them.

We found a lot of scraps of red ribbon that we decided to hang with the lights, too.
This added a lot of flare and made it really stand out!
I simply hung them from the nail and twisted them around the strings of lights,
letting them loosely hang in place.
This has been an awesome tradition so far!
I turn them off as I head to bed at night, and Henry requests to turn them on just before nap
.
Its a wonderful Christmas tradition that I'm glad to start with the boys.
Next year we'll do George's room too!

Now, go spread the Christmas decorations into your kids' rooms this year!
Hang some lights, or even just ornaments from their curtains!
Place the advent calendar in their room, or a special Christmas stocking.
Make them feel special this holiday season!

And we all have leftover Christmas decorations that sometimes don't make it out of the box... send them with the kids to their rooms and see what they come up with!

Halfway through the countdown to Christmas [can you believe it?]!
Join in the Virtual Creative Christmas Countdown with Creative with Kids and 23 other awesome creative kid bloggers!
